Abstract

Despite the increase in the phenomenon of children who assault their parents in recent years, there is a general lack of attention to this and, as a result, there are very few studies on this matter. After reviewing the literature on this subject and expanding it to the studies on crime and behavioural problems amongst youth (empirically validated or not), it can be observed that there are certain deficiencies in the different approaches from the scientific literature that deal with the problem. Mainly, a high level of abandonment, a lack of explanations about the success of treatments, a deficit in the capacity to generalize the results, a lack of common application in clinical settings, and the treatment individualization in each case have been identified. An evaluation process (including continuous and further long-term monitoring) and treatment protocol, which applies to both parents and children, to enable this to be put into practice by diverse professionals, and which are also flexible enough to meet the specific needs of each case are proposed as solutions to these problems. This article, therefore, seeks to propose standards based on the scientific literature for the creation of specific therapies targeting children who assault their parents and who are increasingly common in our society.
