Abstract
In this paper authors analyze the results of elections held on March 9 in Spain in order to find out the key factors that determined the victory of the PSOE, therefore focusing on the analysis of the following variables: Rates of abstention, weight of electoral fiefdoms of the PP and the PSOE, the IU electoral fall and the consequences of the sudden appearance of a new political force in the Spanish political system, UP and D. The importance of these elections resides in the possibility to demonstrate two facts: the transformation that the Spanish political system is experiencing, and the major relevance that some communities acquire amongst others when reaching the national government
