Résumé

The transit of John Dewey’s works in Spain during the first third of the twentieth century. Two examples of editorial reception. This article is part of the current interest in John Dewey’s educational theory and interdisciplinary collaboration between Educational Theory and History of Education. The paper studies the readings of Dewey’s pedagogical ideas in Spain in the first decades of the twentieth century. First, it analyzes the presence of John Dewey in the main Spanish educational journals of the time, the. “Boletín de la Institución Libre de Enseñanza” and the “Revista de Pedagogía”. Then, it examines the translation that the member of the Free Teaching Institution (ILE) Domingo Barnés made of Dewey’s book “School and Society.” The analysis shows how the editorial reception that the authors from the ILE made of the educational works of Dewey, was detached from the philosophical basis of pragmatism, and how their readings were mediated by prior interpretive schemes. In particular, the pedagogy of Froebel acted at the same time, as a driver and as a filter in the reception of new ideas.
