Abstract

The increase of urban areas is one of the main causes of biodiversity loss. In this context, urban parks may play an important role as refugia for native fauna. This paper presents the first study on ant communities inhabiting urban parks in the city of Madrid, Spain. Three parks were studied along an urban-suburban transect (Retiro, Campo del Moro and Casa de Campo), using pitfall traps. A total of 37 species were identified, of which 46% had a Mediterranean distribution, 27% Palaearctic, 5% Ibero-Maghrebian, 8% Ibero-North African, 11% Iberian endemic and only 3% were invasive ants, represented by Linepithema humile (Mayr, 1868).
