Abstract

In this paper, a novel application for obtaining a set of multispectral images of paintings is introduced. The images are captured using a multispectral lens able to diffract the light in the near infrared spectrum. Each multispectral image is represented by a line of the painting in an interval of wavelengths. Thus, a method ables to estimate distances in the image and a focus calibration process in linear images have been designed. For obtaining a whole image, the camera is moved vertically in a very precise way. The images obtained offer a very useful tool for restorers and art historians which have information regarding the painting composition process. As well as the system description, a few enlightening results and new lines of investigation are showed.
