Abstract
This paper presents different approaches used in the educational software development for more than thirty years. In this study we try to determine the factors that have prevented the generalization of the Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI). The stress of the analysis is done in the Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS), identifying as a main problem the low cost/efficiency ratio of ITS production. As a conclusion, and taking into account the possibilities offered by the new technologies (e.g. multimedia), we propose a new and promising way to construct educational software based on: a) providing more initiative to the student and using approximate models; b) using computers in situations where there is a specific motivation for the student; and c) the integration of different standard technologies in the same application.
