Resumen

Este trabajo es el primero de una serie de estudios acerca del estado actual de la investigación sobre el miedo, la ansiedad y la fobia en el ámbito odontológico. En él se recogen las definiciones sobre estos conceptos y su evolución a la vez que se revisan su prevalencia e incidencia en distintas poblaciones. Por otro lado se recogen las principales consecuencias en el cuidado y salud buco-dental, así como los trastornos dentales más importantes que padecen los pacientes con altos niveles de miedo, ansiedad y fobia dental. Se revisan los antecedentes de estos trastornos, el modo de adquisición y las variables que influyen en ellos. Por último se señalan los elementos del tratamiento dental que producen mayor miedo y ansiedad en los pacientes.
