Abstract

The aim of this work was to show the relationship between diferent parameters such as sex, age, plaque levels and gingival enlargement in hypertensive patients under treatment with nifedipine. 62 patients were distributed randomly into two groups. Prophylaxis was performed on each patient before initiating drug therapy. The subjects of group A were instructed in oral hygiene care. Group B followed their normal oral hygiene practices. The patients received professional assistance every two months for 18 months. P.I., G.I. and degree of gingival overgrouth, were recorded. Gingival enlargement was observed in 12 patients (19.35%), all from group B. All 12 showed a statistically significant increase in P.I. and G.I. compared to the remaining patients who did not develop gingival enlargement. Once a good hygiene measures were initiated, a decrease in hyperplasia, plaque, and gingival index was observed in four patients showing complete remission of overgrowth in three patients (no recurrence was observed). Withdrawal of nifedipine or additional periodontal treatment was not necessary. This study suggests that there is a statistically significant relationship between plaque index and the appearence of gingival enlargement. Gingival overgrowth was found to decrease when correct oral hygiene practices were followed in patients treated with nifedipine.
