Abstract

This artlcle broaches the relationship between wind instruments and malocclusions, its relation with orthodontic treatment and the importance for the orthodontist to know in a general way the influence of these instruments on the stomatognatic system structures. lnitialy, a description of the four types of wind instruments is given, as well as its relationships with oral and perioral structures and the malocclusions. Then, the influence on the orthodontic treatment is detailed, as myofunctional therapy or like an obstacle for the malocclusion correction, and also the influence on recidive in retention period. lndications and contraindications of the different wind instruments according to patient malocclusion are given. Finally, importance of a prior orthodontic analysis before instrument assignment is shown, allowing the child to achieve not only the very best musical profit but also an orthodontic advantage.
