Abstract

Apical root resorption of upper incisors is a non-desirable side effect of orthodontic therapy, which can be seen in most of our patients. Several studies deal with the ethiology of these root resorptions but there are very few studies on their long-term evolution once the orthodontic therapy has finished. For this reason the aim of this study is to evaluate the long-term situation of 23 patients that suffered from root resorption ≥2mm of upper incisors durlng orthodontic treatment. Root resorption was measured in three panoramic X-rays: before treatment (Tl), after removal of appliances -active treatment- (T2), and ten years after the retention period (T3). Differences between the degree of root resorption that occurred from Tl-T2 period and from Tl-T3 period were analyzed and means were compared using a Student's «t»-test for paired data. No statistically significant difference was found. These results suggest that the root resorptions that occurred duringtreatment stopped after treatment. Some apical remodeling processes were observed.
