Abstract

Within the pathology of the oral mucosa, colour alterations are of paramount importance, mainly in regard to frequency of occurrence. Among those alterations, white lesions must be known by the dentist, since leukoplakia, the most common white lesion, is considered by the World Health Organization, to be a precancerous lesion. Thus, it becomes essential the abbility of the professional to can identify pathologies, differentiate serious instances from those which are not and, most of all, reach a diagnosis of those which may become malignant. The goal of this article is to systematize and classify white lesions most frecuently occurring in the oral mucosa, in order to set up clear criteria of differential diagnosis, useful to the generalist in their daily activity.
