Abstract

Randomised longitudinal parallel clinical study aiming to asses the dentinal hipersensitivity by means of different stimuli comparing a tooth polishing system (Prophy-Jet) using four different abrassive powders. Methods and Materials: 136 subjets were selectd without hipersensitivy symptoms or any other dental, périodontal or system pathology. These patients were divided into four group and each was assigned to a different air-polishing system based on the degree of abrasiveness. Afther a dental prophylaxis the airpolishing was carried out with the propy-jet system and patients were recalled at intervals 2 days and 2 weeks in order to asses the degree of hipersensitivity. Results: A higher degreee of dentinal hipersensitivity was observer with the abrasives sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate. The other two abrasives showed hardly any reaction. Conclusions The degree of dentinal hipersensitivity after a tooth polishing depends on the abrasiveness of the powder used. Sodium bicarbonate demonstrates a high prevalence of dentinal hipersensitivity.
