Abstract

In this study we have assessed the performance when determining the working length of the RootZX® against that of an X-ray. At the same time, the effectiveness of the locator has been contrasted with that of tactile detection of apical constriction, by comparing both measurements with that determined by the X-ray. The locator used was the Root zx® (Mod. Kyoto 612. Japan. J. Morita Corporation). We employed the following method: Firstly, we proceeded to determine the length with the apex locator; a number 10 file was used. After that we determined the apical constriction through tactile detection; for this we used thicker files. Finally, the X-ray to determine the working length was taken, and this measurement was compared with the two previous ones. The results show that the apex locator provides measurements in accordance with th x-ray in 80% of the cases, against the 61% provided by tactile measuring. In 20% of the tests the locator did not provide a good measurement reading. Such cases came up for teeth presenting caries adjacent to the periodontium, large metallic restorations or crowns, mainly.
