Abstract

Objective: To establish the prevalence of TMJ Syndrome in the Community of Madrid. Method and Patients: A cross-sectional epidemiological study was performed in a randomly selected sampling on a population of 1066 consecutive out-patients from 18 to 65 years old at the different public health centers of the Community of Madrid (Spain). They were examined for the presence of signs and symptoms of craniomandibular dysfunction. The statistical techniques used were the χ² for categorical data and variance analysis for continuous ones. Results: At least one sign or sympton was observed in the 88% of the sample. Their most common symptoms were the «temporomandibular joint sounds» and the «alterations in the maximal opening capacity of the mandible». Conclusions: There is a high prevalence and incidence of TMJ disorders in the health center population of the Community of Madrid.
