Abstract

Nowadays, the quartzite exploited in A Fonsagrada, Lugo (Spain) are used as crushed aggregates in building and civil engineering, especially in pavements. For this reason, it is interesting to characterize and evaluate the long term behavior of these materials with several techniques and standard tests. The aim of this work es evaluate the long term behavior of the analyzed materials in function of several parameters when they are subjected to different environmental agents with different durability tests. The erosive agents considered have been the extreme temperatures, water and salts (NaC1) because these rocks are asually used in pavements subjected to mountain weather conditions and NaC1 is generally used as a de-icer chemical in roads of the North of Spain. This study has revealed that, petrographically, the quartzite exploited is really a quartzarenite. The quartzarenite analysed present clay matrix and porosity. For these reasons, they are ales resistant to the action of the erosive agents selected than quartzite rocks. After durability testing, water and NaC1 get disintegrated the rock. Therefore, these materials should not be used in pavements.
