Abstract

Cancer is an uncontrolled cell proliferation with genetic damage within an organism. The cornerstone of the onco logical treatment is surgery, combined, in the majority of cases, with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Both of them produce a series of side effects, among which mucositis should be pointed out. Mucositis is a painful and debili tating condition, which reduces patient lifes quality, sin ce it promotes anorexia and dehydration, and even dela ying or precipitating the ceasing of the cancer treatment. Due to the importance of the topic, a review about the treatment was done focusing in honey as a new alternative, among the findings, 30 papers were included in our review. The arising interest in the use of honey for the treatment of mucositis is due to its antibacterial and regenerative properties, evaluated in some clinical trials with cancer patients. In spite of the need of a better designed clinical trial with a sufficient numbers of patients, honey seems to be an adequate alternative to improve the symptoms and reduce the duration of the mucositis
