Abstract
The animal combat is a motif of princely, versatile and millenary nature widely depicted in Islamic iconography, whose origins date back to the Mesopotamian world and Achaemenid Persia. Interpreted as a visual metaphor of the monarch's power, this political emblem was related, since ancient times, to royal iconography, being possible to track its symbolical meaning in some medieval literary sources.
