Medio periglaciar, permafrost y riesgos naturales en un volcán tropical extintoNevado Chachani (sur de Perú)

Resumen

El Nevado Chachani (16°11' S; 71°31' W; 6.057 m s.n.m.), situado en la Cordillera Occidental de los Andes Centrales (Sur de Perú) y a 22 km de la ciudad de Arequipa, no presenta actualmente ningún signo de actividad volcánica. En las laderas orientadas hacia el sur se han encontrado glaciares rocosos que muestran evidencias geomorfológicas de encontrarse activos. La presencia de estas formas ha motivado el planteamiento del objetivo del presente trabajo, que consiste en delimitar el área caracterizada por unos determinados parámetros térmicos que posibilitan el desarrollo de los procesos periglaciares y realizar un primer acercamiento a la localización de permafrost en el Nevado Chachani. El interés del tema, en relación con el Cambio Global, radica en la posible presencia de un recurso hídrico, así como las consecuencias económicas que las variaciones de estos sistemas conllevarán a las comunidades humanas. Para ello se han instalado sondas térmicas en el interior del suelo y en el aire en tres estaciones en la ladera sur del complejo volcánico (4.850, 4.976 y 5.331 m). El análisis de la distribución de las temperaturas del aire señala que el límite inferior del ámbito periglaciar se localiza a 4.650 m y por encima de los 5.615 m los procesos de la helada son dominantes. Por otro lado, la aplicación del modelo de distribución de permafrost indica la posible existencia de permafrost por encima de los 5.050 m en las laderas meridionales.
