Abstract

Late life depression is a serious health concern, either because of under-diagnosis or under-treatment, it has led to impaired functional status, increased risk of cognitive impairment, quality of life deterioration, increased mortality and additional medical cost. Besides, as the population continues to age, these consequences will increase over time. Since changes in the aging brain and the presence of medical comorbidity influence the type and expression of depression, its recognition and management has become an important responsibility and a challenge for the clinician.
