Abstract

A revision of the main religious and ideological bases of Hinduism is provided in this paper, starting with the main concepts introduced in the Upanishads. After summarizing the most significant ideas about eschatology and cosmology, special attention is paid to the different ways of achieving liberation from rebirth and to the stages and goals of men’s life. The concept of dharma (‘duty, obligation’) is analyzed in comparison to Western philosophical and religious traditions on ethics and the importance of castes and hierarchy is considered within this frame. Finally, some ideas for reflection in the context of current debates concerning philosophy, politics, and religion are proposed, based on key concepts of Hinduism.
