Abstract

Abdominal pain is one of the most common symptoms of consultation in the Emergency Department, usually associated with intra-abdominal process that may require surgery. The basic treatment, except for specific situations, is absolute diet, fluid therapy, analgesia, and antibiotics valuing nasogastric tube. The most frequent pathologies are reviewed appendicitis, cholecystitis, cholangitis, diverticulitis, mesenteric ischemia and viscera perforation, whose knowledge will allow earlier diagnosis and treatment reducing the further complications; two emerging diseases (appendagitis and omental hematoma of the rectus sheath) whose knowledge could prevent unnecessary surgery based on a diagnosis error is also reviewed.
