Abstract

In behavioral addictions as pathological gambling, addiction to shopping, sex or new technologies, a seemingly harmless lifestyle behavior can become addictive and seriously interfere in the lives of those affected. This type of addictions present similar clinical features as those with psychoactive substance, such as loss of control, excessive excitement before the behavior and relief at the time of it performance. The aim of treatment should focus on relearning the control of behavior and change in lifestyle. The most useful therapies are behavioral, cognitive and cognitive-behavioral as well as self-help groups; the use of psychotropic drugs is reserved for the treatment of comorbid disorders.
