The main objective of the study was to determine the strategies used to prevent or mitigate the impact caused by visitors to archaeological sites (AS) and natural areas(NA) of Quintana Roo, as well as the model of social management for community support and others agents involved. The analysis was conducted from the perspective of sustainability and local tourism development, with a qualitative approach. The information was collected through interviews with managers and landholders of AS and federal NA.The study was complemented by direct field observation. As a main result, the NA are using reactive and proactive strategies while AS only use preventive strategies, although in both cases is widely promoted community participation, but sometimes it can self-defeating, because tourism activities promotes dependence economic and massive use of resources. Nine of the 14 evaluated NA receive negative impacts of tourists and ejidatarios, which has led to over-exploitation or exceeding carrying capacity.
