Abstract

Recanalization therapies restoring blood flow in acute stroke are more effective the sooner they are administered. The interventions aimed to reduce treatment delays are increasingly important in the last years. Emergency physicians should be prepared to suspect stroke symptoms at hospital arrival of patients and contact neurologist on call as soon as possible. Education of emergency medical service personnel and specific acute stroke treatment protocols could be useful to avoid in hospital-delays in these cases. We introduce a protocol focused on acute stroke treatment in emergency room to include the preliminary history, a rapid neurologic evaluation, test request (laboratory test and neuroimaging), specific criteria to recanalization therapies in ischemic stroke and specific hemorrhagic stroke treatment.
