Resumen
Healthcare provision is becoming ever more complex: treatment requires a combination of interventions, technologies and human interactions involving a large number of professionals. This is associated with a growing risk of adverse effects and unintended damage to the patient, which is why actions in the field of patient safety are becoming more and more relevant. Patients in the dental surgery are also exposed to the risk of adverse events derived from the clinical processes. A large number of adverse events in dentistry are related to the use of pharmaceuticals. In addition to "healthy" patients, we see patients every doy who, due to their particular idiosyncrasies, require special dental attention. These special patients include pregnant and breast-feeding women. This study aims to review the pharmaceuticals most frequently used in clinical dentistry, relating them to the physical condition of the pregnant or breast-feeding woman according to the ASA (American Society of Anesthesiology] and the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) pharmacological classification, in order to establish recommendation for the safe use of dental medication in this kind of patient.
