Zusammenfassung

lngestion and aspiration of foreign bodies in dentistry are relatively frequent accidents which are easily avoided. lngestion is more common than aspiration, and the dental specialty in which most of these accidents occur is fixed prosthodontics, due to the large number of times the procedures are carried out. Nevertheless, the literature mentions more cases from endodontic treatment, owing to the complications that can arise from the ingestion or aspiration of the materiaIs used in the therapeutic procedures. Early diagnosis of these complications is fundamental to avoiding serious repercussions, as is understanding the clinical profile of both problems and the protocol far action if they do occur. In the case of aspiration, medical-surgical intervention will always be necessary, while in the case of ingestion it is important to consider the type of object and its position in order to determine what action should be token. In dealing with these accidents the principle is one of prevention using different barrier devices.
