Abstract

Over the approximately fifty years the incunabula period spanned a number of features gradually evolved that gave printed books, which had begun life by imitating manuscripts, their own distinct character. One of the features that best embody this evolution was the invention and subsequent development of the title-page. Various hypotheses have been suggested to explain its origin. For instance, did some 15th-century Italian manuscripts have title-pages? Is the title-page the result of transferring to the flyleaf elements from within the book itself such as the incipit or the colophon?
