Resum

The purpose of this paper is to understand how third molars influence lower anterior crowding by reviewing different crowding studies, as well as the scientific basis for third-molar extraction to prevent or reduce crowding of the mandibular incisors, inasmuch as this topic has been and continues to be the cause of controversy among professionals. The prophylactic extraction of third molars to avoid lower anterior crowding has no scientific basis, since no direct cause-and-effect relationship between third molars and lower anterior group crowding can be demonstrated. Rather, it is a multi-factorial problem, inasmuch as many other factors are involved. Consequently, we must give the third molar a secondary role as a collaborating or aggravating element of the crowding.
