Between 1529 and 1552 Alonso Muñoz, a resident of Jaén, brought legal charges against the brotherhood of Our Father Jesus Nazarene of Jaén on account of the legacy bequeathed to this brotherhood by his aunt, Lucía Fernández. Lucía lacked direct heirs and it may be surmised that, in return for the brotherhood taking charge of the burial and obsequies, she designated the brotherhood as her universal heir. Alonso, who had been providing for Lucía for the twenty last years of her life, pleaded that he be named heir since he was her next of kin. However, all he obtained from the court to compensate for the subsistence expenses he had incurred, perhaps after he had spent more than what the inheritance was worth, was 20 ducats. The Appellate Court or Chancillería of Granada later reduced this amount to 12 ducats. The documents concerning this case are of great interest insofar as they provide valuable information on this ancient lay brotherhood of Jaén.
