Abstract

In this article, the therapeutic effect on dentinal hypersensitivity of a therapeutic agent on a rinse vehicle containing potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride is studied. The main outcome measurement is its capacity to obliterate the dentinal tubules. This is assessed on preparations on extracted teeth analysed by scanning electron microscopy. Two sets of samples were prepared, with different time applicationof the rinses in each groupe (3 and 21 respectively). In both groups, a significant reduction in the number of open tubules was observed, however this reduction was higher in the group with longer application. A method for indirect assessment of dental tubules opennessis presented using silicone impressions of the dentinal surface of the hypersensitive tooth. This method would allow its in vivo application and S.E.M. study of tooth surfaces without extraction.
