Abstract
According to the World Health Organiz^tion. a prcterm birth takes place before week 37 of the pregnancy and/or with a weight of less than 2.500 g. The etiology of the preterm birth is multifactorial. and the main causes are maternal or fetal. The main manifestations in humans bom under these conditions are morphologic and functional. In ihe área of the mouth researchers have found oral defecls such as isturbances to tooth structure and ihe palate. among others. According to the different authors there is an association between preterm births and enamel defects in primary teeth; enamel hypoplasia is the most common defect in the primary teeth of premature children. However. up unlil now there is no scienlific evidence linking defects of the enamel in ihc permanent dentition and preterm births. Despite previous research on the subject. more longitudinal studies are needed in order lo confirm the results and conclusions found.
