Abstract
In recent years, Cyclosporin (CyA) has been commonly used to discourage organ graft rejection. It has significantly improved the survival rates for transplant patients, however extensive gingival hyperplasia has been associated with its administration. 46 heart and liver transplant patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy with CyA for 3 months or more, as well as a control group of 15 patients matched for age and sex, were studied to assess the extent of gingival overgrowth in relationship to the other clinical parameters. Dental plaque, gingivitis, duration of CyA therapy, CyA dosage and serum levels of CyA were mecasured and statistically correlated with the incidence, severity and location of gingival enlargement. None of the patiens in the control group demostrated significant gingival hyperplasia, despite comparable plaque and gingivitis scores. Within the CyA treted patient group, a significant positive correlation was found between gingival enlargement and CyA serum level (p< 0,01), as well as with both plaque and gingivitis scores. A less significant correlation was found between gingival enlargement and CyA dosage (p< 0,01). No such correlation was found when duration of CyA therapy, sex or age were considered.
