Abstract
Available information about the inmune system role in the pathogenesis of periodontitis is still unconclusive and often controversial. The cellular inmune response can be supressed by factors derived from periodontal pathogenous flora. On the other hand, if such response is normal, it can cause lesions in the fibroblasts mediated by natural killer cells (NK). The excessive number of plasmatic cells found in the periodontal lesión, could be due to an humoral response, T-dependent or T-independent. Interleucine 1 (IL-1) appears as the most important of the soluble mediators studied. Ne- vertheless, the available data about its effects are still partial. In spite of the increase in serum IgG concentration seen n the presence of periodontal pathogenous, there are not proofs of its action. Macrophages play an important role in the resorption osea phenomenon.
