Abstract

This paper shows the classical origin -in Greece and Rome- of the biographical gender and their first appearance in Spain. Through the study of prevíous works the main characteristics of this kind of collective biographical repertoires. And the main obstacles in their elaboration are shown. Following this information, the paper explains about the creation of the Royal Academy of History and the achievement of its creation in the Spanish Biographical Dictionary it was just completed. Finally, the presence ofJaen and the diverse characters from Jaen among more than 40.000 biographies included.
