Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the expansion movement of the first upper premolars affects their gingival tissue support structure. 12 patients were treated with a Quad-Helix exerting 100 g (of pressure) on the first upper premolars. A control group of 9 patients received no treatment. All patients in the study had both gingivitis and plaque indexes inferior to 1. The following parameters were measured on all patients at the begining of the study and two months later. 1. Width of attached gingiva. 2. Width of keratinized gingiva. 3. Attachment loss. 4. Pocket probing depth. 5. Gingival recession. The results indicate that only one patient in the treated group showed attachment loss of 0.5 mm and another patient in the same group showed significant increase from 1.96 mm before treatment to 2.42 after treatment in pocket depth. The rest of the parameters measured showed no statistically significant change.
