Abstract

Bolton discrepancy is a common alteration, nevertheless there are few references about its incidence. In the present paper total as well as anterior relationship using Bolton analysis has been studied in two groups, the control one formed by 50 girls and 40 boys from elementary school with no orthodontic treatment and the second one composed by 40 girls and 32 boys from a private orthodontic office. Bigger disharmony between upper and lower teeth size was seen in orthodontic patients; one third approximately of the second sample (32%) presented anterior Bolton discrepancy. No significative difference on dental excess (4.6 mm total relationship and 2.3 mm anterior relationship) were founded neither in the groups nor within sexes. Mesio-distal disharmony between upper and lower teeth was mainly located in the lower jaw due to big lower incisors (50%) and in the upper jaw also because of little lateral incisors (30%). The outcomes show the need for Bolton analysis practice and dental stripping treatment.
