Abstract

The purpose of this study has been to investigate whether the slow expansion performed with Quad-Helix is associated with the ocurrence of root reabsorption. The study was carried out in 23 patients ranging in age from 12-14 years, with posterior cross bite and with indication of orthodontic treatment extraction of the upper first premolars. The experimental group contained 12 patients to whom aproxímately 100 grs. of pressure was applied over the palatal (surface) of the first upper molars using the Quad-Helix. The control group consisted of 9 patients who were not given any kind of orthodontic treatment. After two months of treatment with the Quad-Helix, the upper-first premolars were extracted. Light microscopy study of the coronal third of the root revealed that 35% of the patients showed some kind of root reabsorptions, located generally between the most apical position of the epithelial union and the alveolar crest. It was also observed in diferent specimens the presence of distrophic cementosis phenomena.
