Abstract

We study the development of students’ informal mathematical skills in first grade, through the strategies they invent to solve arithmetic word problems. We have created a learning environment, with a workshop format, where students produce their own strategies and representations to solve the problems. This allows us to observe the development of informal and concrete strategies toward more formal, symbolic and abstract knowledge and representations on mathematical contents related to place value, tens and arithmetic (addition). This development of mathematical knowledge implies processes of progressive formalization and mathematization.
