Abstract

Periodontal therapy aims at dental retention, periodontal insertion preservation and disease progress detention. In order to determine the actual characteristics and coverage of the periodontal treatments carried out by spanish stomatologists, a "Research by questionnaire" was conducted among the spanish board certified stomatologists. Descriptive statistics were applied to summarize and present the data. To test the significance of the observed differences between independent samples, the x2 (Chi square) test was used. Full and partial periodontal therapy was offered by 16% and 64%, respectively, of the respondents. The most frequent treatments were oral hygiene, motivation, scaling and root planning, oral hygiene and motivation were, to different degrees, carried out by hygienists. Treatment rejection by the patient was cited as the most frequent cause for not providing periodontal therapy. Based on these results, a more extensive postgraduate periodontal education and a better information to patients are proposed.
