Resumo

A periodontal study was conducted comparing a group of heart or liver transplant patients undergoing cyclosporin therapy and a control group of patients who had not undergone any transplantation. Data collected included the gingival overgrowth (HarrisEwalt), plaque (Silness-Lóe) and gingivitis (Lóe-Silness) indices, and the gingival sulcus measured with a Michigan type periodontal probe. In the transplant patient group, data collected included also the oral cyclosporin dose and the cyclosporin blood concentration (RIA). To test the significance of the observed differences between the two groups, the Student's t test was used. To identify correlation between variables, the Pearson test was used. Mandibular incisors had higher overgrowth indices than other teeth; gingival overgrowth was predominantly papillary and vestibular. A highly significant statistical correlation was found between gingival overgrowth and cyclosporin blood concentration. Heart transplant patients showed higher overgrowth scores than liver transplant patients.
