The Labor Inspectorate was formally created in Spain in 1906, as a further step in the process of origin and development of our labor legislation, and following the model of similar institutions that were being created in many countries around us for the same purpose. Since then, it has experienced a constant process of modernization and adjustment to the needs of the productive system, both at the organizational level and in the field of its functions and scope. Although changes in political regime have been noted in certain aspects of its regulation, it is also true that after a century the Spanish Labor Inspectorate has managed to maintain not only many of its characteristic features, but also its presence among the leading institutions of the system of labor relations and social protection in Spain. For some time, or in relation to certain sectors of activity, it has had to concur with other monitoring and control instruments, but its historical trajectory has served to consolidate its structures and to reinforce its principal role in the activity of inspection of social laws. Designed as an inspection with a general scope, some specialization in the fields of employment, occupational health and safety or social protection has been sought in recent decades. In the same way, its initial monitoring and control functions have gradually been enriched thanks to the assumption of other tasks of technical assistance or mediation in labor disputes. Moreover, its unitary and integral design has tried to become compatible with the political structures put in place with the Spanish Constitution of 1978.
