Resum

A multi-disciplinary team based at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid has introduced the social sciences into discussions of the fictional town in La Mancha whose name Cervantes states that he chooses to forget. By considering all of the relevant historical and sociological details mentioned by the narrator, but with special emphasis on the travel times stipulated in the narrative between real places, this article establishes the capital of the Campo de Montiel, a region often mentioned in the novel, as the most probable historical model for Cervantes’s fictional setting. While traveling there the author may have learned of a crazed local hidalgo who was executed for anti-social behavior similar to Don Quixote’s. This article examines the relationship between universals in literature and their grounding in historical realities
