Abstract

This paper is concerned with the Stelae of Southwest Spain. Tradicionally, they have been associated with tombs, but we propase here to consider thcm as landmarkcrs, recognizable in the landscape, and signalling resources and routes. They scem to be located at the edge of two complementary ecological zones, and they even mark territorial boundaries. This view is coherent with the importance that cattle and trade had in the economy of this time.
