Abstract

In contrast to Western Christian ideas which assign a posthumous eternal identity to the dead person, the Maya-Tzeltal people of Chiapas, Mexico imagine death as the dissolution of individual identity. On being born the fetus folds in on her capturing fragments of the Other side (the souls). At body’s demise, the moment of unfolding, these souls are restored to the Other side and the body disappears.
