Abstract

Abstract The term acute venous disease is falling into disuse. In its place are the terms deep vein thrombosis and venous thromboembolism disease, which can include pulmonary embolism. Acute venous disease is at times a complex process due to the considerable quantity of differential diagnoses and the possibility for nonspecific symptoms. The current instruments include probability scales, D-dimer, Doppler ultrasound and, in selected cases, computed tomography angiography, magnetic resonance angiography and venography. The sequential and joint use of these resources according to the various recommendations has provided considerable precision in the diagnosis.
