Resum

Abstract Lympho-oedema of the extremities is a chronic disease that entails an accumulation of interstitial fluid and fibroadipose tissue. Primary lympho-oedema is produced by congenital abnormalities; secondary lympho-oedema is the result of underlying diseases (malignancies and their treatment), infection (filariasis) or trauma. There are various clinical stages depending on the characteristics of the oedema and the improvement after raising the extremity. The severity (mild, moderate or severe) is established based on the difference in volume. The diagnosis is based on the history and physical examination, with measurements of the extremity. Imaging tests help rule out other diseases and, when assessing disease severity, are useful for suspected neoplastic disease. Treatment is above all conservative, with dietary and general health measures, prophylaxis and treatment of infections. Treatment is based on complete decongestive therapy in specialist centres, depending on the clinical stage of the disease.
