Resumo

The present text offers a global picture about how the phenomenon of corruption in the Hispanic Monarchy, between the 16th and 18th centuries, has been analyzed and evaluated. In spite of the existence of an extensive bibliography in this respect, there is not even a consensus on the precise content of the term "corruption," although there is no doubt of its negative perception by the contemporaries, along with its rejection and condemnation of the "public good".The text reveals the existence of a wide range of measures implemented by the administration to control royal officials and their practices. The "efficacy" of such measures is also the subject of debate among researchers, a topic that we also analyze in this article.
