Resumen
The adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is a benign epithelial lesion with an odontogenic origin. It is rare and derive from odontogenic epithelium. It occurs mainly in young women, in the anterior maxillar, sometimes associated with an impacted tooth. First described, in 1934, by Ghosh as adamantinoma of the maxillar, currently classified in the first group of odontogenic tumors, ie, those derived exclusively from odontogenic epithelium without ectomesenchyme. It´s clinically asymptomatic and, when it grows, it can feel like a large, hard lesion that causes changes in the adjacent teeth being displaced more common than root resorption. Radiologically it shows a radiolucent, unilocular, circumscribed and well defined image. If associated with an impacted tooth, most often it is the upper canine. It´s considered a slow growth injury with little tendency to recur and its treatment of choice is enucleation. The purpose of this article is to analyze the most important characteristics of this tumor through a comprehensive review of the existing literature and presenting a case of TOA in a patient of 14 years with no relevant medical history.
