Resumo

This article focuses on the participation and inter-family relations in the schools attended by their children, culturally diverse. Specifically, the photo-elicitation was used, where verbal and photographic languages were used by parents to tell stories about issues that are important to them. These stories began in meetings at school and were continued in their family and social contexts. Following a biographical-narrative methodology, in each biweekly meeting of five quarters, photographs taken by parents were projected, and then verbally discuss its contents. The main purpose of these meetings was to improve mutual knowledge of the participants, by evoking and understanding of the intentions and interpretations of the reported events. We can see that two different photo elicitation situations emerged: descriptive and argumentative, different from each other in form and narrated content. The photo-elicitation had a significant role to play both in descriptive and argumentative situations; by providing a setting and a calm atmosphere they improved parents´ knowledge of each other, independently of your level of mastery of the Spanish language and the country of origin. In photo elicitation discussion situations, the analysis of the image has given rise to meanings linked to the level of iconological symbolism. Looking ahead, it is interesting to continue work on the processes of meaning in second representations for ascertaining the extent to which each one of them acquires or loses meaning in the photo-elicitation process.
