Abstract

Shared parenting is the relational component of joint custody. Like all relationships, it requires intentionality and negotiation processes that constantly define it in different evolutionary stages. It provides identity and a sense of belonging to a cooperative role that promotes prosocial behaviours. From a communicational perspective, functional and dysfunctional patterns of interaction that define different types of co-parenting that may develop in the context of joint custody are described. The general proposition is that joint custody may encourage shared parenting, often with the help of professional resources such as therapy or mediation. When shared parenting is blocked or damaged, it is possible to promote the decision to change based on acceptable mutuality.
